Sweden\u2019s life science industry is currently\u00a0under pressure. In their recent election pledges,\u00a0the country\u2019s politicians referred to investments\u00a0in this industry. However, although the new\u00a0government stated in the 2015 finance bill that
\nit wants to support life science research, it has\u00a0not yet presented any concrete proposals on\u00a0how it intends to do this. The industry\u2019s trade\u00a0associations, however, have now put forward\u00a0a coherent action plan.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

There have recently been several large investments in the\u00a0Swedish life science industry and these are expected to\u00a0produce results in the long term. Industry representatives\u00a0have identified the need for a coherent plan that enhances\u00a0competitiveness through improved structures and smarter\u00a0use of existing resources. It was therefore very disappointing\u00a0that Sweden\u2019s new government has not addressed the issues\u00a0in the finance bill.<\/p>\n

In late October, the trade associations LIF, Swedish\u00a0MedTech and Sweden BIO\u00a0 consequently presented a\u00a0coherent action plan for the life science industry, with\u00a0the aim of strengthening Sweden\u2019s competitiveness in\u00a0this field.<\/p>\n

Their proposals are divided into seven areas. The trade\u00a0associations emphasise the importance of grants for\u00a0research, as well as the mobility of researchers between\u00a0academia, healthcare and industry. However, they also\u00a0propose measures to create business growth, use innovative\u00a0new treatments in healthcare and to attract industry\u00a0to and retain it in Sweden, as well as coordinating and\u00a0promoting Swedish life science.<\/p>\n

With the trade associations\u2019 action plan as guidance, it is\u00a0hoped that the government will soon present a coherent\u00a0strategy for the industry, addressing the areas that are key\u00a0to strengthening Sweden\u2019s competitiveness in this field.\u00a0Setterwalls will, of course, monitor this issue closely.<\/p>\n
