Setterwalls makes a strategic recruitment in the growing area of tax and recruits advokat and VAT specialist Marie Hedin from Maqs Law Firm. Marie is employed as Specialist Counsel within the Setterwalls tax group as of 12 March.

“Setterwalls has recently made a range of strategic recruitments as a result of a growing demand for our services. We are extremely pleased to be able to count Marie Hedin as one of those. Marie is an extremely well-respected VAT adviser with strong experience of VAT issues in a broad range of sectors, not least of a procedural law nature. We are already one of the leading players within tax advisory services among law firms in Sweden. By recruiting Marie we are putting Setterwalls even more clearly on the map as a leading adviser and partner within the tax area” says Joakim Edoff, managing partner of Setterwalls.

Marie Hedin, 46, has worked with Maqs Law Firm since 2009. Before this she worked as a VAT adviser at Ernst & Young for 8 years and as a tax adviser at KPMG for 6 years. Marie also has considerable experience from the Swedish Tax Agency, Skatteverket, where she worked for the first 6 years of her career. She also has a great deal of experience with excise duties and for a time was responsible for one of Ernst & Young’s two tax groups in Gothenburg.

“Being a successful adviser within tax advice in general, and VAT advice in particular, is about always offering measured commercial solutions and ensuring that each assignment is handled effectively with the client’s best interests in mind. This permeates through Setterwalls’ strong team of tax advisers, who assist both Swedish and international clients. It will be exciting to be part of this and to further develop Setterwalls’ services in this area. It is particularly exciting and gives clear added value to the clients to be involved as a tax adviser from start to finish, from concept to execution”, says Marie Hedin.

“We look forward to being able to develop our VAT advisory services further with Marie Hedin. In recent years we have seen a growing influx of questions relating to VAT, and we feel that this is a growing area within tax advisory services. VAT legislation is complex and often involves elements of EU law. We are therefore very pleased that we have been able to engage a recognised specialist in this area. Our services to companies and organisations, not least larger companies with international transactions, will now be further strengthened”, says Emine Lundkvist, head of Setterwalls tax group together with Sören Brekell.

“The recruitment of Marie Hedin further strengthens Setterwalls’ position as a full service partner in relation to tax advice to companies and private individuals. We know that it requires many years of experience of qualified tax advice to best handle our current, and future, clients’ issues in this area. With the recruitment of Marie we will be able to provide an even more complete tax advisory service”, says Sören Brekell.

Tax is a significant practice group within Setterwalls, with almost 20 lawyers. The group brings together lawyers with long experience and a breadth of knowledge within the tax area with people with cutting-edge expertise in areas such as international taxation, incentive programmes, private companies, litigation, M&A related tax questions, and VAT.

With the help of the combined expertise and experience of various industries and areas of law in the firm’s other practice groups, the tax specialists assist with everything from the planning and execution of transactions, restructurings, tax litigation and ownership planning to risk assessments of tax positions. This is always with the overarching aim of finding measured commercial solutions. Our clients include both Swedish and foreign companies, organisations, agencies, municipal corporations and individuals.
